Have you thought that you could easily beat junk food cravings?
Well, sugars are just as addictive as cocaine. And as cocaine is so dangerous to your health, so is too much sugar.
That’s why you feel less energetic while doing your tasks or too bubbly before people.
Honestly, some of us have that sweet tooth and we crave junk foods. But since we want to embrace a healthier lifestyle, we have to learn how to beat junk food cravings.
‘I have to have a bar of chocolate at 4pm’
‘There is no way I can eat chicken without the chips’
‘The only thing that helps me unwind on my way home is a packet of biscuits.’
It is easy to say that when it comes to junk foods, many don’t have willpower, but research has shown that fatty, processed and high fructose sugar treats can actually be addictive as cocaine and heroin.
Research also shows that obese and compulsive eaters are drawn to junk food. That is why we should cut down on junk food at all costs.

Ways to Beat Junk Food Cravings
1. Understand the ‘why’
Why do you crave the foods that you do? Are you angry, frustrated or stressed? Can you talk about it with someone?
Understanding the cause of your cravings can really go a long mile into beat junk food cravings.
Personally, I used to crave French fries whenever I’d get so anxious from too many assignments. And honestly, I’d eat too many fries. Add sausages. Add fried chicken. Add soft drinks. Oh…it was sweet but detrimental to my health.

2. Make fruit viable alternatives
Once you understand what makes you crave junk foods and the type of junk foods you enjoy, find fruity alternatives.
Eating fruit need not be synonymous with deprivation. Make this part of you.
Personally, I love watermelons, pineapples, apples, grape, and berries. These fruits are not only sweet and healthy but also, full of nutrients your body will appreciate.
So, find the fruits you love and make a financial substitution.
Here is my example: I used to eat junk foods worth $3 daily. Honestly, that was too much: a plate of fries, a piece of sausage meat, fried chicken and a bottle of any soft drink I preferred. Summing up, the whole amount comes to $90 a month and $1080 a year on junk foods ONLY!
Once, I substituted these junk foods for fruit alternatives, not only did I cut down on my food costs but over time, I felt healthier.

Some of the tips of enjoying fruits that I really employ include:
- Eat fruits on an empty stomach because this makes their nutrients absorbed into the body first. Hence, you’ll see the results faster.
- Enjoy fruit pudding. Mixing fruits can be even healthier and sweeter. You’ll love this.
- Make smoothies. Fruit smoothies are so good and even better on an empty stomach.
- Make fruit juices and remember to not add sugar. Just take pure fruit juices. You can add water to make them thinner at times.
- Add herbs and vegetables when making fruit juices, smoothies or pudding for a healthier solution.
Fruits can be expensive and having fruits daily really takes so much sacrifice. Personally, I eat more fruits and vegetables for breakfast and a bite after every other meal.
Honestly, if you just look into your budget and find what to squeeze, you’d be surprised that you can afford fruits and vegetables daily. I had to squeeze my credit and data costs and it works!
3. Don’t think it’s ‘all or nothing’
If you tell yourself that this is the last chocolate or burger that you’re ever going to take, you’re going to be more likely to binge.
So if you want to beat junk food cravings don’t go all in and cut down all the junk food you have been eating. You might find yourself back really eating them.
Instead, start cutting down on junk foods slowly. Here are some few tips:
- Make your own junk food at home.
- Start by eating at home. Instead of visiting Starbucks, make your own cup of coffee at home like you want it and enjoy it.
- Eat only what’s cooked at home. If they cook the turkey at home, eat that and nothing else. This will also help you save on costs.
- Don’t treat yourself to a junk food restaurant. Instead, treat yourself to a healthier menu.

4. Fight salty and sweet cravings
Most of us have sweet or salty cravings so if we have to beat junk food cravings, we have to fight these cravings.
Instead of crisps and chips, crunch on crisp vegetables dipped in avocado dip or hummus. I would love a thick paste or spread made from ground chickpeas and sesame seeds, olive oil, lemon, and garlic. Yummy! And healthy!
Broccoli and cauliflower florets are also super crunchy alternatives.
Instead of sweets, sweet drinks and bites, eat sugary fruits that contain natural sugars like pineapples and watermelons.

5. Choose non-food treats.
We all need a pat on the back for hard work, but instead of rewarding you with a piece of chocolate cake, why not treat yourself to a new book or pair of shoes? You can even take yourself out on a vacation. Terrific!
